Ben is a graduate chemical engineer and Brooklyn Law School graduate. Following law school, Ben worked for five years as a Principle Law Clerk to a New York State Supreme Court Judge working mostly on Criminal Law cases, preparing draft opinions of pre-trial motions and researching legal issues arising at trial. Several of these opinions approved by the Judge were published in the New York Law Journal. Ben left the court system to practice law for a medium sized law firm specializing in Environmental Law. As a member of the New York and New Jersey Bars, Ben performed audits of industrial sites for clients seeking to purchase facilities without costly environmental cleanups. In this role Ben had an opportunity to write about New Jersey’s Environment Cleanup Act which was published in the New Jersey Bar monthly periodical. Ben was then appointed one of five Commissioners of NYS Crime Victims Board by the New York Governor for a term of seven years. In this semi-judicial role, Ben was responsible for approving payments to victims of crime to cover medical and funeral expenses and served on a three-member panel with subpoena power to hear and rule on appeals of those whose claims were denied. During this period, Ben was assigned by the Board to oversee payouts to 9/11 victims’ families to cover mortgage bills following the tragic bombing of the World Trade Center. He also acted as the board’s liaison with families to locate their missing family members. While serving as a Commissioner, Ben wrote about the statutory framework of the Crime Victims Board which was published in the monthly NY Law Journal Magazine. At the end of Ben’s term, he served on the staff of a member of the House of Representatives from NYS for over 10 years. In this position he drafted letters for the Congressman and worked with constituents to resolve everyday issues impacting their lives, ranging from health care, Medicaid, Medicare, to small business and major company regulatory issues. Upon retirement, Ben and his wife Patti moved to New Bern in 2021. He joined New Bern Breakfast Rotary in 2023 in the hope of using his experience and background to help organizations and members of the community achieve their goals.
